Commercially, tomatoes are planted in the warmer months in the same raised bed fields that farmers use to plant peppers, squash and watermelons earlier in the spring.  It is often a good practice to fumigate the field before planting the tomatoes, reducing the number of plant pests at a site before the tomatoes are planted.
